2017 Otsuka Taikai – Details For Volunteers/Shinpan

Subject: 2017 Otsuka Taikai – Details For Volunteers/Shinpans

Greetings MBK Member!!

As you know, the 2017 Otsuka Taikai will be held this coming Saturday, 15th of July. It is a very important event in the MBK calendar as it commemorates the opening of the Kenshikan Dojo in June 1990.

As per every year, volunteers will be required to help with the running of the event. It’s a big day and the more volunteers there are, the better.

Help will be required this coming Friday, starting at 6:00pm, to help prepare the dojo. This will require cleaning the dojo, organising of tables, chairs, score boards, tatami mats, etc. Your help will be greatly welcomed and appreciated. And of course, afterwards we can go out and have a bite to eat….

On the big day, the dojo will be open from 8:00am. There will be two taikais – an Iaido Taikai and a Kendo Taikai. Volunteers will be required for the following responsibilities (not necessarily for both taikais):

1. Competitor Registrations,
2. Time Keeping,
3. Scoring,
4. Announcing,
5. Ribboning,
6. Shinpaning,
7. Photography/Videoing, and
8. General helping.

Again, if you’re able to do so, your help will be greatly welcomed and appreciated. No prior experience is required to volunteer so it’s a great opportunity to learn. It doesn’t matter what art you practise – Iaido, Kendo or Naginata – the event is a club event. And of course, people from other clubs are also welcomed to help – so pass this on if you know any who would like to help.

The dress code for volunteers is as follows:

1. A plain white shirt,
2. A plain black/dark pants/skirt,
3. A plain black/dark pair of socks/stockings, and
4. A plain tie – preferably blue.

Shinpans for the Kendo Taikai, 3rd Dan and above, will be required to wear the standard shinpan uniform (taken from the FIK shinpan regulations):

1. A plain, dark blue jacket,
2. A plain, grey pair of pants/skirt,
3. A plain, white shirt,
4. A plain, deep red necktie,
5. A plain, dark blue pair of socks/stockings.

The schedule for the day is being finalised and will be sent out once it has been.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I look forward to sharing this big day with you.

Cheers and all the best.

The Ballarat Kendo Club Inc 30th Anniversary Demonstration & Taikai (Saturday 11 November, 2017)

2017 marks the 30th year of the Ballarat Kendo club Inc. This non for profit club began officially in February of that year following a beginners course held the previous November.

In the ensuing years the clubs has introduced Kendo, Iaido and Jodo to many enthusiastic and curious people from Ballarat and its surrounding areas. Some have gone on to achieve success at State, National and International levels and for this we as a club are very proud.

Importantly Kendo is an activity that you do not do on your own and we appreciate that Ballarat has been helped along the way by individuals and other clubs over these 30 years.

It is our turn to put back something of p Hi significance to the Victorian Kendo Renmei.

To celebrate and thank the many sensei, colleagues and friends that we have met during our journey we introduce the Ballarat Kendo Taikai.

This is our inaugural tournament and is in this first year an individual competition. It is an opportunity to test our shiai skills in good competition as well as celebrate our friendships and what we share together.

We look forward to seeing you all on this special day not just for the Ballarat Kendo Club but for all members of our our Renmei.

There will be two competitions on the day, Kyu individual and Dan individual with no other restrictions.

Entry will be $15 per competitor
