Hey guys, anyone interested in daytime keiko? If so, contact Andy via the contact details below.

Hi all,

please see the following from Andy Gararg (Mumeishi) about potential daytime keikos. Looks like a great idea, so please spread this to everyone in your clubs.

Cheers,

Katie

Recently a few Mumeishi members have enquired about the possibility of getting together during the day for some friendly non-formal training.
We will, of course, be following the required courtesies -all Kendo starts and finishes with Rei Ho etc. But the format will be individual warm-up and then free ji geiko.

The idea is to be able to work through specific problem areas with an active partner, workshop concepts and generally refine our individual Kendo.
Too often, when in a main class, students are hesitant to ask for specific help on problem areas within their own kendo. Especially beginner to intermediate kendoka.

Generally this opportunity relates to people who, through their various professions, are required to work afternoons | evenings (Hospitality, Shift, Security etc.).
Some are students and some, like myself, are self employed and have reasonably flexible hours (depending on projects and seasonal requirements).

With this in mind, and Sensei Brent’s blessing, I am seeking expressions of interest from other VKR members who may be interested.
So far we have the possibility of two free venues: one in Pakenham and one in Berwick. But the location is dependant on where individuals are based.
I have in mind to locate the venue central to those who are interested and commence early 2012.

So, if you are interested, can you please let me know via the following contact details.

Kind regards,
Andy

Hey everyone,

Here are the details for the funeral from Katie.

Good afternoon all,

The funeral directors, WD Rose, have advised the below arrangements for James’ funeral.

Tuesday, 31 January at St Brigid’s Church, 520 Main Street, Mordialloc, Victoria, 3195.

The service will begin at 1:30pm.

The church is on the corner of High Street and Nepean Highway (also known locally as Main Street or Como Parade).

The church is about 50-60 minutes drive from Melbourne Airport. Map. Co-ords -38° 0′ 15.40″, +145° 5′ 3.80″. Taxi would be about $80.00+.

The freeway from the airport is a tollway, but Citylink passes can be purchased after you have travelled, online or on the phone.

If you are driving from elsewhere near Melbourne, follow the Nepean Highway to Mordialloc. After you pass under the railway line, look for the church about 400m on the right.

Hey everyone,

Sad news. Alas another 7th Dan has passed away just recently.

Dear friends,

It is with great sadness and regret that we convey the news that Jamie Fennessy sensei, Kendo 7th Dan, passed away on Sunday afternoon after a battle with a swift and aggressive illness.

As a pioneer, mentor, ambassador and friend, Fennessy sensei made an extraordinary contribution to Australian kendo. Some of his more notable achievements in Kendo:

The attainment of 7th Dan at the age of 37 years, becoming one of, if not the youngest Westerner to obtain this ranking

The founding of the Tasmanian Kendo Club as well as the co-founding of the Melbourne Kendo Club

Representing Australia numerous times at an international level.

In more recent years, Fennessy sensei brought a continued passion for Kendo and teaching to Victorian dojos, to the benefit of both new and experienced kendoka.

The training, support and unforgettable advice offered by sensei has altered the landscape of Australian Kendo, and for that we are in his debt. For his friendship and passion, he is in our memories.

For those wishing to attend the funeral service, details will be in today’s (Tuesday’s) funeral notices in the Herald Sun, as well as Wednesday’s Directors’ notices. It is anticipated that the service will be held early next week, most probably on Monday.

The Victorian Kendo Renmei will be sending a wreath of flowers on behalf of all members. For those wishing to make an individual contribution, the Funeral Directors’ details are as follows:

WD Rose – Brighton

139 Marriage Rd, Brighton, Vic, 3186.

Telephone: 9593 1000. Fax: 9592 9777.

Any questions can be directed to Katie at secretary@kendovictoria.asn.au or Stilts at registrations@kendovictoria.asn.au.

Best wishes,

It’d be nice if you could volunteer and get involved!

Hi all,

As you know, the students and senseis from Nittaidai are coming to Melbourne in February!

As such, we will be needing a good deal of help and ideas when it comes to promoting their demonstration at MSAC on the 18th.

Here’s what we need:

DELIVERY BOYS / GIRLS

A number of posters have been delivered to the VKR, and we’ll be needing hands to drop them off and pin them up at key spots around town.

IDEAS

We also need to figure out just where these key spots are. In short, where can we put them that will have the most impact?

The ideas so far:

University sports halls / cultural centres

Centres for other martial arts

Martial arts stores

Anime stores

Japanese language schools

If you can help, either by contributing ideas or picking some posters up from Kenshikan (or another location, which we can arrange) then let us know!

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Katie

News from Katie about the Nittaidai visit coming up!

Hi all,

This year we are again lucky enough to have senseis and students from the prestigious Nippon Sports Science University joining us for the weekend of the 18th – 20th February.

As always, the highlight of this weekend will be the demonstration given by students on the Saturday evening. This is an unmissable event – not only will we get the chance to see some elite level kendo, but practitioners from a variety of other Japanese arts (think aikido, karate, kyudo, sumo and shorinji-kenpo) will also display their skills.

Put this in your diary! If possible, hijack your friends’ and family members’ diaries as well and put it in theirs. This is an event that everyone will enjoy.
